From Hope to Darkness: The Star Wars Prequels

The Fall

In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin’s inner conflict finally comes to a breaking point. His secret marriage to Padmé Amidala and his growing disillusionment with the Jedi Council leave him feeling isolated and betrayed. When the Council denies him the rank of Jedi Master, his resentment deepens, and the trust between him and Obi-Wan begins to fracture. Anakin longs for recognition and guidance, which Chancellor Palpatine is more than willing to provide.

Palpatine manipulates Anakin’s greatest fear—losing Padmé. Tormented by visions of her dying in childbirth, Anakin becomes desperate for a way to save her. Palpatine feeds this desperation by promising that the dark side holds the power to prevent death. Caught between his love for Padmé and his loyalty to the Jedi, Anakin ultimately chooses power, betraying the Jedi and becoming Darth Vader.

Anakin’s fall is swift and tragic. He leads the attack on the Jedi Temple, slaughtering even the younglings, and carries out Palpatine’s will during Order 66. His duel with Obi-Wan on Mustafar becomes the final, devastating clash between master and apprentice. Defeated and left broken, Anakin is consumed by the dark side, reborn as Darth Vader. His fall marks the destruction of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire.
