From a simple idea to an iconic attraction that has thrilled millions since 1985

Humble Beginnings

Skyline Rotorua's story began in 1981 when founder Hylton Hensman purchased farmland on Mount Ngongotaha. The vision was to create a unique attraction that showcased the stunning natural beauty of Rotorua.

Construction began in 1984, and on March 10, 1985, Skyline Skyrides Rotorua officially opened to the public, featuring its iconic gondola ride. It quickly became a must-do activity, and in 1986, the world's very first Luge track was built, adding a new layer of thrill that would become famous worldwide.
