Squash started in the early 1800s at Harrow School in England, where students used a soft ball that “squashed” against the wall. This made the game more interesting than the older sport of rackets, and the name “squash” stuck. The game spread through the British Empire, especially to places like India, Egypt, and Australia. In 1923, official rules were created in England, and courts became standardized. From the 1950s, Pakistan dominated the sport with players like Jahangir Khan, who was unbeaten for five years. Later, Egypt became the top squash nation. Squash will finally become an Olympic sport in 2028, over 200 years after it began.
