Wright Flyer

On December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville Wright piloted the first powered, controlled, and sustained airplane flight in history.

Wright Flyer, traveled 120 feet in 12 seconds. The brothers had designed and built the plane in their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, before transporting it to Kitty Hawk for testing. Conditions that morning were cold and windy, but the strong headwinds actually helped the Flyer lift off more easily.
