How To Play Volleyball
Goal of the game
Two teams try to score points by hitting a ball over a net and making it land on the other team’s side of the court.
Basic Rules
- Teams: Each team has 6 players on the court.
- Scoring: You get a point if the other team:
- Lets the ball hit the ground
- Hits it out of bounds
- Hits the ball into the net
- Winning: A set goes to 25 points (win by 2). A match is usually best 3 out of 5 sets.
- Hits: Each team can hit the ball up to 3 times before it goes over the net.
- Rotation: When your team wins the serve back, players rotate clockwise.
How To Play
- Serve: One player stands behind the end line and hits the ball over the net to start the rally.
- Receive: The other team tries to control the ball and use three touches:
- 1st hit – Pass (bump): Use forearms to pass the ball to a teammate.
- 1st hit – Pass (bump): Use forearms to pass the ball to a teammate.
- 2nd hit – Set: Use fingers to push the ball up for a teammate.
- 3rd hit – Spike: Jump and hit the ball hard over the net.
- Defense: Try to block or dig (dive) to stop the other team's spike.
- Divided by a net.
- Attack line (3-meter line) helps decide where front and back row players can hit from.

History of volleyball
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He originally called the game "Mintonette" and designed it as a less intense alternative to basketball, especially for older adults. The first version used a tennis net raised to 6 feet 6 inches and allowed multiple players and hits per side. In 1896, the name was changed to "volleyball" to better describe the action of volleying the ball over the net. he game quickly gained popularity, especially with help from the YMCA, which spread it internationally, including during World War I.
In 1947, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was established to oversee the sport, and by 1964, volleyball became an Olympic sport at the Tokyo Games. A newer form of the game, beach volleyball, gained popularity and was added to the Olympics in 1996. Today, volleyball is played in over 200 countries and remains one of the most popular sports globally, with two main types: indoor and beach volleyball. Its fast-paced action and team-focused play continue to attract players and fans of all ages.
